How is it possible to hold the event for free?

SURF JAM FESTIVAL operates without any financial support from the local government or sponsors. Instead, we rely on revenue from official food and drink vendors, vendor fees, donations, merchandise sales, and most importantly, the help of volunteers who work without pay.
That said, we’ve never actually made a profit. We’d really appreciate it if visitors could support us by using official vendors instead of bringing food and drinks, and by picking up any trash they might see. Every little bit of help makes a big difference!

What does picking up trash have to do with free admission?

Actually, quite a lot!If trash is left behind, someone has to clean it up. That means more work for the staff—or having to hire extra help—which costs money.
But if everyone pitches in just a little, that burden becomes much lighter. When visitors follow good manners and take care of the space, it helps reduce costs—and that helps keep the event free.
So yes, picking up trash and free admission are more connected than you might think!

So there really aren’t any trash cans?

That’s right. We aim to be an environmentally conscious event, and we hope visitors will join us in that effort.
Please take home any trash from what you bring.Trash from items purchased in the market should be returned to the shop where you got them.
Thanks for helping us keep the venue clean!

What is “nage-sen” (donation box)?

“Nage-sen” is a way to show your support for artists or the event by giving a monetary tip. It’s like a donation or a pay-what-you-want system—no set amount required.
Instead of an entry fee, if you enjoyed the event or felt inspired, we welcome your contribution in the donation box.
